Don't judge, inspire.

Joanne Bridge • 8 January 2023

Don't be that person who judges the newcomers.

It's that time of year when lots of people make resolutions to join the gym, start a new fitness class, loose weight, get fit, etc. It is also the time of year when social media posts start to pop up complaining about gyms being busy and mocking newbies for not knowing how to use gym equipment.

Take a moment to think back to when you first stepped into the gym or tried a fitness class for the first time. Do you remember how terrifying it was and how it felt like all eyes were on you? I certainly do.

Maybe this year, if you see somebody looking nervous or unsure, you could offer to help them and make them feel welcome. You may end up being the reason they stick to their health and fitness resolutions this time.

As for complaining about gyms being busy, gyms and leisure centres have had a really rough time over the last few years and many are still struggling now. If your gym is busy, be grateful that it is less likely to be facing closure.

Gyms and leisure spaces are for everyone and a healthier population benefits us all.

Are you just starting (or restarting) your fitness journey? I'd love to know how you are getting on. Send me a message to let me know.
